Alfresco Dining – Be a BBQ Master!
When it comes to summertime, and the tasty topic of alfresco dining, we start to get very excited! At Simply Kitchens we think there's nothing better than indulging in some truly delicious food teamed with the ambience of the gorgeous outdoors (as long as the weather holds up!).
BBQ’s are usually at the front of the line in people’s minds when it comes to alfresco dining. It's a fun social gathering where you can cook an array of food and with television programmes such as Man Vs Food and BBQ Champ on our screens it's trendier than ever to be a whizz at the grill!
Charcoal vs Gas
Before you decide whether to choose a gas or a charcoal BBQ, you’ll want to think about how and how often you’re going to use your BBQ. Some people prefer more traditional charcoal BBQ's where the ritual of getting their BBQ going can take 30-45 minutes. However, for convenience sake gas BBQ's do an equally brilliant job of letting you cook in the great outdoors but without having to wait around to start cooking; they also have the added benefit of easier heat control due to the use of burners which are similar to those found on oven hobs meaning you are in total control. However, a true BBQ'er will argue that a charcoal BBQ will deliver much better tasting food!

A good BBQ depends heavily on the prep that has been done before hand in the kitchen. Proper preparation can be key to a successful BBQ and should not be overlooked!
A full-flavoured marinade can be the difference between a dry kebab or a succulent tasty masterpiece. Some marinades are best left overnight so be sure to plan ahead if you are out to tickle your guests' taste buds!
Not just for meat!
It's important to remember that a BBQ is not just for meat! Most people will automatically think of faithful burgers and sausages when it comes to a BBQ but there's so much more! Fish can be beautiful when BBQ'd. For example: a whole fish, seasoned and wrapped in tin foil is an easy and impressive way to add some flare to your menu (with minimal prep!). Vegetables should not be overlooked either, vegetable kebabs can be a welcome side or alternatively mixed with meat/fish or how about Halloumi?
A good BBQ isn't complete without an array of side dishes, from salads, sauces, dips, rice, potatoes and pasta. The side dishes again come down to some good preparation before the event. Nothing beats a homemade potato salad or coleslaw to compliment your beautifully BBQ'd centrepieces. But how about something a little more adventurous? Pasta salads are an easy way to create pleasing side dishes and can be flavoured how you would like, how about a Pesto, Cherry Tomato and Feta pasta salad topped with a sprinkling of pine nuts? Yum! Or how about adding a spoonful of curry powder to your coleslaw for an alternative side?
