In Season: Rocket

June 7, 2017
June is one of the best times to get your hands on some fresh peppery Rocket! The "marmite" of the salad leaf world, people tend to either love it or hate it. It’s aromatic, peppery and somewhat bitter taste often divides people, but we love it! Packed with vital nutrients and known for detoxing, helping with digestion and even fighting cancer. It’s not just the peppery taste that's unique – it’s also said to be quite the libido enhancer! It’s used worldwide and is popular in salads, on pizza and in some countries it’s even considered a staple at the breakfast table.

Rocket Facts:

- It is known as ‘rocket’ simply because of its rocket-fast growth speed.

- Salad rocket is an annual plant, meaning it survives for only one growth season, just like tomatoes.

- Rocket is an extremely hardy plant and highly drought resistant which is why it’s often cultivated in areas of poor rainfall.

- It’s easy to grow rocket as it needs little water, grows in dry soil and grows very quickly. Perfect to start off that low maintenance salad patch in the garden!

- In northern India, which often has spells of no rain, rocket seeds are pressed to make Taramira oil which used in pickling, cooking and salad dressings.

- Salad rocket is rich in vitamin C, an important and powerful antioxidant with benefits for body cells and skin health.

- Rocket is extremely low in calories, (woohoo!) with just 0.5 calories per leaf. So you can eat it until your heart’s content!

- If you're in need of Iron and Copper in your diet but don’t like spinach then rocket is a great substitute as it contains high levels of both.

- Rocket is a cancer-fighting food, containing chemicals which have been proven to fight carcinogens in the body. How amazing is that!?

Rocket provides an intriguing base for a salad topped with anything from shellfish to fruit, nuts and seeds. Last week we experimented with some Rocket Salad toppings of our own!
