March, with a hit of Spring!
Continue the support of local charities
Pancake Day was really special to us. Once again we invited the young people from Routeways to join us in celebrating Pancake Day! There were savoury pancakes and swee, with many different toppings! The young people flipped pancakes, with some landing on the floor, but the majority on the pan and thankfully plate. We love collaborating with Routeways and they all seemed to have so much fun. They made good use of working together, learning new skills while enjoying eating the pancakes. We are hoping that this will not be the last venture that we share with them and if you haven't yet viewed the video on our Facebook page and Youtube Channel, please do as I’m sure it will warm your heart.
Mum’s the word
With International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day in March, this month was certainly all about celebrating women. We added in some beautiful case studies. Particularly the Bedale from the Laura Ashley collection, which would suit any woman who is truly in touch with her feminine flare. With tributes to some of the leading women from the South West, March allowed us to reflect on how much we value the women that have strived to make improvements to ‘everyday’ things in life. The Victoria Sponge with a twist was the perfect recipe for a cake for any mother on Mothering Sunday. Not only did we enjoy the taste of the cake but the making of the cake was also fun too! The twist included buttercream icing with traditional strawberry jam, but we added blueberries and strawberries. A top prize for our monthly competition, was a Spa voucher to the value of £100 for the St Mellions Resort in Cornwall. Perfect present for any mother!
Saint Patrick's Day
How could we not celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day? This mouth watering Steak and Guinness Pie is the perfect dish for the celebration, not forgetting a nice pint of cold Guinness to wash it down with. There was some controversy about whether or not a pie should have a bottom. The answer is that, ‘Yes’ pies can be made without a bottom! Pies are usually defined by their crusts. A pie that is filled is known as a ‘single-crust’ pie which has a lining in the baking dish with the filling placed on the top and the pastry is left open. A ‘top-crust pie’, which is the one we made, which only has filling at the bottom of the dish and is covered with pastry before baking. Whichever pie you decide to make, if you follow this simple recipe your tastebuds will not be left disappointed.
