Simply Sardines!

Some people see sardines as somewhat "old fashioned" and more often than not they are presumed to come straight out of a tin. But with fish becoming more and more popular as people turn to red meat alternatives, sardines are making their way back up the popularity ladder. Tinned or whole, there are endless ways to eat them and now with top chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Delia Smith championing these tasty little fish the sardine is finally getting the recognition it deserves in trendy recipes and healthy gastro eateries!

As well as being cheap and sustainable Sardines are mostly caught with encircling nets which cause limited bycatch and virtually no damage to the ocean bottom. Win win!

Available whole from a fish counter or in a tin, both are delicious and not to mention full of calcium and healthy omega-3 fats. We have found some great recipes to inspire you make sardines a regular in your home.

Sardines & Avocado on Toast

Ok so let's start simple! This effortless recipe is super yummy, healthy and filling. It can also be made from tinned sardines which makes it perfect for a quick brunch or lunch for a busy schedule.  A great way to familiarise yourself with the bold flavour of the sardine without committing too much!

It is pretty much what it sounds like, tinned sardines (ideally in water or alternatively in oil but well drained). Wholegrain toasted bread, mushed avocado, salt and pepper, maybe a little squeeze of lemon juice! (or hot sauce if you want something a little more adventurous!)


Jamie Oliver's Harissa Sardines with Couscous Salad

You will need to visit your local fish monger for your sardines for this one, but the perks are you can ask them to the messing bit and get them scaled, gutted and with the gills removed. This recipe involves pan frying the fish with bold harissa flavours and sounds delicious for a summers day lunch or dinner.

Delia Smith's Barbecue Sardines with Summer Herb Sauce

Something a little more tricky for those of you who don't mind the whole fish and getting your hands a little messy!

If you are planning on hosting a BBQ this summer then it could be the perfect time to try out this recipe. Something a little different to the standard sausages and burgers, this recipe can be prepared well ahead of time too so no rushing on the day!

Sardine Fish Cakes (....great for the kids!)

A great way for the kids to get involved in the sardine trend! These healthy and easy to make fish cakes are a quick and easy way of getting all the goodness of these little fish into the your own little ones, but without the eyes! Again this recipe uses tinned sardines so it couldn't be easier.
