Small Kitchen – Big ideas

The small kitchen dilemma!

We all dream of a spectacular spacious kitchen with an island, range cooker, dining table and room for entertaining guests. The harsh truth is sometimes we just have to make the best of what we have.

But..... just because your kitchen isn't the size of the Great British Bake Off tent, it doesn't mean you can't have a functional kitchen to impress and cook up a storm.

Small kitchens don’t have to look crowded and full.

It sounds obvious but how about taking a look at what you use and don’t use in your kitchen. What could be kept at hand and what could be packed away until it’s needed?

More modern kitchen design styles can give even the tiniest of kitchens an impressive amount of storage with clean line floor to ceiling cupboards, making the most of all the available height in your room. A great space for hiding away those items you rarely use keeping your worktops clutter free and looking clean and tidy.

Limited worktop space? Consider clever storage solutions like wall-mounted magnetic knife strips or rails to hang utensils and pans. Or make the most of that inaccessible corner cupboard with a Le Mans unit (below) which glides out so everything is in easy reach, each shelf taking an impressive 20kg weight (that's equivalent to your holiday suitcase!).

At Simply Kitchens we believe smart storage and clever accessories are integral to making your kitchen perfect for your requirements.

Wall cabinets not your cup of tea?  Consider doing away with them. Open shelving can make a huge impact in a small kitchen, creating an open and airy feel, as long as you limit the amount of shelves you use, and you can keep them neat and tidy!

Smooth hidden handle cupboards give a clean modern appearance.

Fully Integrated appliances are a great way to keep your compact cooking haven looking streamlined yet fully functional. And by having a combination microwave oven you can do away with the chunky counter top microwave you feel you can't live without.

Not every kitchen will have room, but if your heart is set on having an island, consider a slim-line design. Your central workstation may be small, but it provides extra storage space and a useful worktop for food preparation.

Not enough room for an Island? How about a butcher's block or portable kitchen trolley to provide extra prep space? It can then be moved out of the way when not required.

Good lighting will enhance your space and can be added in or under wall cabinets and at plinth level to create depth. Try back lighting shelving units or down lighting glass fronted cabinets. At Simply Kitchens, Plymouth we take the design of all lighting into serious consideration with every project we create.

Make use of every space – to give a streamlined look and flow to your kitchen gaps between units should be utilised to full advantage. Insert some shelving to make the perfect wine rack, create tray or chopping board storage or insert a Spice Rack unit? It's all about utilising the space you have to make your kitchen work for you, whatever the size!
